Welcome to one of the prettiest and most welcoming villages in the North East of England. This web site is designed to give information about both the community and the various organisations operating in and around the village.

History

Elwick is a small, rural village in the north east of England located about 4 miles to the west of Hartlepool. With a population of less than 600, the village is a small and closely knit community which is fortunate to have some facilities which bely its size.
The village dates back to Saxon times with the first evidence of a settlement being about 1100. Part of the Church building certainly dates as far back as 1190. The older part of the village surrounds a traditional village green running east to west but modern developments have occurred to the north and east of the Green from the late 1950s onwards.

About

The village has a number of interesting features including St. Peter's Church , a picturesque church served by the Vicar who is also the Vicar of St. Mary Magdalene in the nearby village of Hart. Also, St. Peter's Elwick C. of E. Primary School which has over 100 children on the school roll. We were also fortunate to have a post office/shop but that has been closed for some time and we are not sure what it's future is. In the meantime a post office van comes to the village several times a week. At the moment (December 2017) the two pubs are still in business but it is not clear how long this will last. Unfortunately, the village seems to be suffering the fate of many rural areas with local business diminishing. At least we have our high speed broadband!

At the moment, the village also has a rural bus scheme linking Elwick Village to Hartlepool on three days a week but, like many rural communities, it is a constant battle to keep the service going.
There are many active organisations within the village of Elwick and this site will provide information on them all. Follow the various links to the School, Church, Parish Council, W.I., Millennium Association, Young Farmers Club as well as the Village Shop & Post Office and two village pubs The McOrville and The Spotted Cow, and do use the calendar to keep abreast of events. We hope that whether you are a first time visitor to Elwick or a long time resident that you will take full advantage of this site.

Message from the Chairman

I am delighted to welcome you to this new website which has been sponsored by Elwick Parish Council. It is a second attempt to try and bring the village into the 21st Century and has been designed to serve the whole of the village. We are fortunate to live in one of the most delightful villages in the north east of England, not only because it is such an attractive place but also because it has such a sense of community and belonging.
We hope the site will dramatically improve communications both inside and outside the Village but, bear with us, it is a new web site, a work in progress maintained mainly by amateurs, which will develop over time and help people form a picture of the vibrant community in which we live. My thanks go to all those now and in the future who will contribute to the site, in particular our IT guru Paul Dickson, without whose help, guidance and incredible patience none of this would have been possible.
